"Good," Theo said firmly. "Because if you tried, I'd have to find a new location for your head. I really don't want to bother." She sighed. "I told Bel I'd give her over before sundown..." It was getting late. "Shards. I mean.... sh...oo...m."

C'rin twitched a bit and pouted. "Can I hold her again before you give her up? And what on Pern are you trying to say?" He hadn't understood her at all. Sh...oo...m? What the shards?

Theo glared. "You shouldn't curse in front of the children," she explained. "Shoom is an alternate word." Wow, Theo. Just... wow. "All right, you hold her for a moment. I'll go and find Bel." She handed the baby over and dashed off, instructing Perdido, who Nai assumes was still there, to watch him.

C'rin tried not to laugh at Theo, finding himself too occupied with Teydrin to actually laugh. He was careful not to jostle her and wake her, holding the girl comfortably. "Shoom is such a silly word. You should say 'shards'" he informed the sleeping baby. He didn't want his child growing up to spout nonsense words.

((Had to do this! )) Fia spotted the Weyrleader holding...something. So, being Fia, she went over to take a closer look. And barely suppressed a squeak. She turned wide brown eyes upon the Weyrleader. "C'rin! She's adorable, sir! What's her name?" She smiled at the little girl. "She really looks like you, y'know, C'rin." She smiled at the man. "Really, a lot." Oh, Mith! Yours has a precious little squishy now! How adorable! You must both be so proud!-------------- K'rion watched with wide eyes from a ledge above the scene. ( ) Because. He. Is. A. Teenage. Boy.

C'rin startled at the appearance of another person, naturally edgy and foul around others that went around suddenly popping up. But somehow he just didn't have it in him to be upset when he was holding his little angel. "Hey name is Teydrin," he was starting to get that goofy, 'I'm a father!' grin again. "You think? A lot, you say? Well, no wonder she's so adorable," his grin got bigger. Ah yes, the way to his heart right now was flattery, and Fia was most certainly earning herself a good spot on his 'People To Not Kill In Their Sleep' list. I know! Mine is very proud, and so am I. The little squishy is soooo cute! <3 Yes, Mith can speak hearts. Which he had.

Fia's smile widened. "That's a beautiful name. And yes, you're a father! I'm sure you'll be good one, too." She had completely forgotten the Riders' children were fostered. Her smile grew warmer.
Normally she would have snorted at the 'so adorable' bit, but who could blame the man for being excited? "No wonder at all," she replied, nodding, eyes bright with tolerant amusedment.
Her mind was only half amused.
People had called C'rin a jerk. She'd heard a bazillion rumors. But he seemed like a -dare I say it?- pretty decent guy.
Now that she thought about it, she'd never heard anything particularly nice about the Weyrleader. Well, if anyone asked, they'd hear it. Not that she'd spread rumors. Just defend the man should the need arise.
Fia loved befriending people with social problems. Though 'friendship' with C'rin may be stretching it a bit...
But hey, she could try, right?
Yes! Soooo cute! Cuter than a...a...a purple BUTTERFLY! Much cuter!
Coming from Beneath, that was a big deal.

It is not as cute as mine were, Lykath said dismissively. And Ours will not even keep it, as is according to custom.
A few minutes later, Theo was back, Mehitabel in tow. Bel smiled ruefully at the necessity of wresting the baby from C'rin, who she had never seen so happy in her life. She was happy to take Teydrin, of course, since her last one had just grown up and gone to work and, with poor Winth the way she was, it wasn't fair to deprive the Amber of a chance to mother. "Hello, Weyrleader," she said politely, bowing. According to rider custom, she wore breeches even though she didn't often go out with Winth. "May I take her now?" Theo looked sulky. She didn't want to hand over the baby, not really. It had probably been a mistake to get so attached...

"It is a beautiful name!" he was agreeing readily with anything she said that could be construed as a compliment to the little girl. He didn't seem to notice the toleration in the other as he continued to beam over his beautiful baby. And yes, Fia could try all she wanted, but 'friendship' as she knew it would be a long, long time coming. Really? there was a pause, and then Mith added: You know, in a way I'm a lot like a big purple butterfly.
C'rin glared at the Amberrider when she approached. She had a dragon and still time to care for Teydrin. He had a dragon, too, so shouldn't he have time? He didn't need to go through the motions of playing Weyrleader. He had skewed logic, but everyone knew that. "No, you may not," he scowled at Bel and clutched Teydrin to him protectively. He didn't want to give her up after only having known her for less than a candlemark.

Theo scowled, exasperated, but Bel only nodded mildly and stepped back. She knew better than to be in the way when the Weyrleaders argued. "C'rin," Theo said, "Just... come on, we can go and visit tomorrow if you like. Just let Bel take the baby." She didn't want to let go either; why was he allowed to obstinate when she wasn't?!

C'rin could be obstinate because he wanted to be. He wasn't concerned with how anyone else thought of him, if only because every already thought poorly of him. What was one more temper tantrum? "Can't she just stay with us for the night?" Yes, he was close to pleading, if only because he knew he wouldn't win this. Bel was a smart girl.

Theo scowled. "You shouldn't get too attached," she informed him. "That's one of the points of fostering. Parents in power don't get attached. Shoom, man, just give her over!" There she goes with 'shoom' again. It was almost scary. Bel stared at her with something like bewilderment. Shoom?

C'rin raised an eyebrow and addressed Teydrin. "Don't listen to your mommy, darling," okay, how odd was it that he used the word 'darling', "say Shards. Shards," he repeated for her benefit. And ignored Theo. He didn't want to give up the baby. She'd have to pry her out of his arms.

Perdido, somewhere in here, had given Bel her Katidid. 'Cause Avi says. And Kati-dear needs a fostermother.

Theo's eye twitched. Darling? Who the shard- oops, shoom- was this man? She leaves for a few months and he, A) goes soft and, B) loses his mind even more? "I told you not to curse in front of the baby," she snapped. She wouldn't dream of snatching the baby. After a moment of wordless glowering, she sighed and turned to Bel. "I'll give her over tomorrow. Won't I, C'rin?"
