This was the second day, and B’aral was feeling a bit more confident.
A bit.
Not much, it was true, but as everyone had listened to what he’d said yesterday –Imagine that! It was so cool!- B’aral was ready to face them again today!
You’re weird. Slornth commented, rolling over in the sun.
“Yes!” B’aral said, spinning to point at his sleepy dragon, who was now ignoring his rider.
The Weyrling lesson was taking place in the Weyrbowl today, as gliding was to be done before flying, and the lower ledges in the Weyrbowl were perfect for this. That, and B’aral wanted to give the Werylings a chance to bath their dragons.
They had arrived, and B’aral had taken out his scroll.
“Hi!” B’aral said, waving for them all to gather around.
“Remember me? Well, I only saw you yesterday, so I think you should. I remember you. Isn’t that great?” He actually remembers something! He deserves a cookie!
“Anyway, let’s start by going over the rules. One. No relationships between Weyrlings. Two. Do not attempt to fly until you have been given express permission from ME, and me only. Three. No betweening until you have graduated. Four. Listen to all instructions from me, and obey at once. If you are not in the Weyrling lessons, then listen to any instructions given to you by all riders. Remember those, because there will be a ‘test’ given on them at some point.”
Eviiiiiiil B’aral. This was just to make sure the Weyrlings were listening and paying attention. If one of the seven couldn’t remember one of the four rules, well… that Weyrling didn’t graduate, and if B’aral was feeling particularly evil that day, none of them would. There was only four, and they were simple. No one would have trouble.
“Okay, first, I am going to set you a list of things to do in your down-time. I know that you have quite a bit of this, or you will after today, because I shall be scheduling lessons ever sevenday or so, to let your dragon mature. This needs to be done, so, to fill in your time, I shall be giving you your tasks!” Smiling and oblivious to the glares of the riders he was bound to get, B’aral shuffled down his scroll, muttering words under his breath.
“Ah! Here we go! And remember, I shall know if you have not done the work, and you won’t graduate.” B’aral pointed to one Weyrling at a time, and read out their tasks. They went as such:
Blue Salaronth to Jeise - Running messages for Weyrfolk
Bone Baynath to L'ros - Laundry duty
Bone Justith to K'fe - Glow duty
Winter Blizzarth to T'ri - Laundry duty
Gem Misoriath to Kayla - Help clean and cook in the kitchens
Black Purplath to F'sal - Help clean and cook in the kitchens
Spector Marinoth to K'rion - Laundry duty
Green Saristh to Perdido - Running messages for Weyrfolk
Violet Laynath to Kindre - Running messages for Weyrfolk
Rain Lilith to Z'them - Glow duty
Storm Adath to Raiden - Laundry duty
Bloodrose Dusth to Pandra - Help the Weyrwoman with the paperwork
Coral Reath to Luciana - Helping in the healing ward
“If anyone has a question or concern, come talk to me after I’ve finished! Okay, onto the lesson.” B’aral pointed up to the ledge that was right above them, about sixteen feet above the Weyrbowl floor.
“Gliding! Now, don’t get excited. Your dragonet has been out of their shell only two days, or forty-eight hours. They are not yet big enough for you to ride them! So, don’t even try! You and your dragonet shall follow me and Slornth up to the ledge, and we shall demonstrate-“
Must we?
Shush, Slornth. Be nice.
“-what you all shall do, and then we will call you down and you shall mimic us. The riders will wait until their dragon has touched down, before they come down via Slornth. This will give the riders a chance to be on a grown dragon’s back.”
B’aral smiled, facing the Weyrlings once more as he contemplated what he was going to say next.
“And after you have all done that successfully, we shall be going over to the lake, which is just over there. There you shall scrub down your entire dragon with sand, wash them off, and then oil them again. You will oil them after you have killed one of the herdbeasts I have set up for you, and skinned it for your dragon and fed them. I shall require this after every lesson until your dragon becomes big enough to fly and hunt on his or her own. You will have to feed them about once every other day, but that will change depending on the dragonet. Ready, everyone? Okay, lets go.”
B’aral showed the Weyrlings how to glide, and then had Slornth stand next to the ledge. The Weyrling dragons were to glide off and land a dragonlength away. The rides were to climb onto Slornth’s front leg, and then climb into the saddle and over to his other side and then down. As each one finished, B’aral pointed them to the chilly lake, where he’d set up more oil, and some herdbeasts in a pen.
