Weyrling lessons!
Fun!
Well, no, not really.
It was the fact that there were...
So.
Many.
Sharding.
Weyrlings!
AGUGH!
Slornth wasn’t a lot of help, as the brown didn’t have a large memory. It was the reason that dragons had riders. Although there was no thread, some things still needed to be taught to the Weyrling.
Now it was time, and all the preparations that B’aral had done were coming together. The heardbeasts had been slaughtered and assembled. The knives were ranged along the table, and the pots of oil and paddles were on the slightly smaller table, which had been pushed to the side.
B’aral started scribbling a few more notes. There was always so much to remember! Names, colors -as so many looked alike!-, faces, facts, important details, jokes. The list went on and on. The parchment that B'aral had been using for three turns now was looking rather tattered, smudged and ripped in places, but otherwise was usable. All his information was on that sheet. He wasn't about to give it up to anyone.
Slornth was lying behind him, and both the rider and dragon were waiting for the Weyrlings to assemble before they began. B’aral was afraid he would forget something, but he’d writing absolutely every thing down. He had started pacing back and forth, much to the annoyance of his dragon. They were starting to come.
Once everyone was there, B’aral started his prepared speech.
After he found it on the skin, B’aral stared.
“Yo! Weyrlings! Yes, that means both the dragon and the rider. Welcome to the first of about five Weyrling lessons. I am the Weyrling Master, B’aral. That is my dragon, brown Slornth. The position of Weyrling Master is one you are probably all familiar with, yes? Well, I'm in charge of y'all, you you better listen up.”
He looked over them, one eyebrow raised. He was a kind man, but if he got any lip from any of them….
Well, they’d find their morning –and evening- klah very spicy….
“We will be your teacher, and your guardian. First, we need to lay down some of the base ruled. One. No relationships between riders. This can be very damaging to your dragon. Two. Do not attempt to fly until you have been given express permission from ME, and me only.”
They had better be paying attention. These rules were not set down for the Weyrling to ignore or just for fun. Ever single one of the rules were meant for the safety of the newly bondeds.
“Three. No betweening until you have graduated. If any one of you breaks this rule…” Yes this was a threat, and yes, it was from B’aral. If B’aral was making threats, this was serious.
“Four. Listen to all instructions from me, and obey at once. If you are not in the Weyrling lessons, then listen to any instructions given to you by all riders! They may be important!” B’aral had not stopped pacing until now, but as he finished with the rules, he finished with the movement.
"Oh, and one more thing. Currently, as most of you know, there is a deadly disease going around outside the Weyr." He paused. Possibly inside too, but no one had gotten it yet, so it was all good.
"So no one is allowed outside of the Weyr.
“Now that I have officially chewed you out for what you might have done,” He said, his sunny side eclipsing his serious side, “It’s time to actually start the lessons!” His smile grew larger, and he held up his hands.
“Any questions? No? Good.” B’aral hadn’t given them time to raise their hands, or even speak, but as soon as he was finished, they could ask any questions before they began.
“Well, as you can see, these are the slaughtered heardbeasts that I have prepared. I killed them for you this time, but next time I shall not. Your dragonets are probably hungry. All they have had to eat in their entire lives out of the shell is the small amount of meat you gave them at the hatching. I say probably, because when I did this, Slornth wasn’t. Slornth. Is. Not. Normal.” Important fact.
“Everyone see the knives? Well, I want every single one of you to come and pick up a knife when I say so, and then go and grab a heardbeast. You must skin it, and chop it up into small slivers that your dragon can handle, and feed it to them. Stop when they tell you they are full. If you are ‘grossed-out’ by blood or raw meat, then remember this: if you do not feed your dragonet, they shall die. When they die, most likely, you will die too.”
“So, when you have finished feeding your dragonet, they shall become sleepy and happy. Before you take them off to sleep, however, you must oil them. If you do not oil and then clean and wash your dragonet, their hide shall be cracked and disfigured. When you finally learn to transfer between, these disfigurations in their hide shall crack open, and your dragonet will either die right away, and you both will be lost between, or the wounds shall become infected, and you will die later.”
“The oil pots are here. Pick up one and a paddle, although you do not have to use the paddle, I highly suggest it, because the oil is very sticky and nasty. Oil up your dragonet, because they will grow when they sleep. Show me what you have done, and I will dismiss you as I see fit.”
B’aral nodded happily, and rolled up the scroll as he looked around at all the new riders.
“Anyone have any questions now? If not, they you may begin! If so, come and talk to me. Off you go!”
