Theo was bothered by Shinth's melancholy tones as she walked across the weyrbowl. Shortly after Depth had risen, the Yellow and his bonded had been sent off on border patrol, along with Baran. It was the custom to send Healers along with border patrollers, because if they were injured they would be far from the Weyr, and possibly unable to fly between. People with this job were often gone for months at a time.
The Weyrwoman froze mid-step, and stopped to listen.
I hear you. What's wrong?
We are eighty miles from the Weyr, Shinth's voice continued, urgent. Do not panic. We are in no immediate danger. Our location is Silver Cove Hold. No damage was done to this holding by the tsunami, but the population is in serious peril. A disease has been spreading rapidly, causing major fatalities across both continents. Mine and the Healer are trying to help, but we cannot return for fear of infecting the Weyr.
What are the symptoms?
They include violent cough, difficulty breathing, high fever, loss of consciousness, chills, and death.
Theo nodded.
All right. Stay there. Are you sure you can't come home?
Yes. The Healer fears infection.
Be careful. I'm putting the weyr in confinement- is that understood? No one is allowed in or out until you send us news of safety.
Understood. Report completed.
((As of now, everyone is confined to the Weyr and Weyr grounds. All Searchriders are recalled, as are patrollers who have not been introduced to this disease.))
