"So..." he trailed off, eyes darting back to her. Shards, the more he tried to sit still, the harder it was to be still. His fingers played over the hem of his jacket before slipping down to tap tunelessly against his leg. Whatever beat it was, only C'rin knew. And by the look on his face, he wasn't going to share.
Dum dum de deedle de dee, went his mind. Deedle deedle de-de dum!
"So I was thinking that once you get better we could have lunch with Teydrin," his eyes moved away again, as if he couldn't stand to look at her as he said it. Seeing her like that, sitting in his chair all healthy as she died in front of him...well, it did effect him. Even if Theo didn't think so. Even if C'rin didn't think so. It did. And it hurt.
Deedle de deeee do do dum! his mind beat louder to drown out the thoughts and feelings. It didn't want to deal. Dealing meant accepting that she would be dead at some point. Some soon point. And accepting that was unthinkable, really. Though he wouldn't take the time to figure out why that was.
I will tell him to act a little better. I do not know how well it will work, but maybe he will listen, he gave the equivalent to a dragon shrug. If C'rin didn't listen, he didn't listen. There was nothing he could do about that. But he chose to save the plea for later, as His was being more decent than normal at the moment.

Theo pursed her lips, unsure if C'rin was mocking her or not. He had to know that she wasn't going to get better, didn't he? Huh. Maybe he didn't want to admit it. After all, it would mean more work for him if she wasn't around.
Well, she wasn't going to burst his little bubble. At least he was some non-Healer company, and if he was going to be pleasant, she wasn't going to ruin it...
"I'd like that," she said instead. "Of course, we might have to break down a wall or something. Or maybe bathe in boiling water. Bel won't let us anywhere near the children with the disease on us."
Lykath sighed, and shifted on her couch.
Mith, will you not join me? she said mournfully. She was being awfully short with him, but she was lonely... I am sorry I am being rude to you. Mine is sick, and I am afraid... and I feel as though I am going to Fly soon. Now that, that was not good. The stress of a Flight would probably just up and kill Hers. But as long as Theo was technically conscious, it could happen, and it was nearing what would have been the time if not for the disease.

C'rin frowned. What was she talking about? Break down a wall? Bathe in boiling water? Only sick people would have to do that to see children.
Dum de doodle... his brain stalled. But hadn't he said something about not being able to see the children? Because they were sick. But - deedle de dee. His brain picked back up, refusing to think about it. Since C'rin didn't really want to put forth effort, he didn't fight it.
"No, I think Bel would let us walk in. I don't see why not," he said it very matter-of-factly, as if he had forgotten that both of them were sick. And really, he just wasn't considering it part of his reality. Which meant it wasn't worth thinking about. A vicious cycle.
I will come, Mith answered immediately, feeling uneasy over the tone of her voice. She had always been so happy, but now with the sickness she was always sad. Mith didn't like sad, but he was tired. So tired. Where had all his energy gone? He hadn't really noticed flying, knowing only that he arrived next to Lykath and curled up next to her. It is fine, I do not mind. Pause. You feel like you will Fly? Another pause. Well, I will be there. Yes, he would be there if she fell. Or if she needed the support. He would be there.

"But you just said that she wouldn't let you in because you can carry the disease on you without being sick," Theo pointed out, frowning. She was sure he'd said that. She couldn't have made it up.
"Ugh, never mind. It's not important. But, anyway.... I'd like to do that." She sighed. "I miss her. I wonder if she's talked yet... Or made any noise at all..." It was almost disturbing how quiet that baby was.
Lykath curled up with Mith. Thank you, she said. But maybe if I have eggs I can be stronger for Mine, she suggested hopefully. If I have eggs to look after, maybe I will remember how to look after her as well.

"What? I said nothi-" he shut up when she dismissed the subject. He wasn't going to push it if she wasn't. He still felt uneasy about the feeling that he actually had said it. But no. Didn't need to think about that.
"I can try to find out," he offered. He wanted to know, too, now that he thought about it. It was okay to think about Teydrin. Teydrin wasn't...uh...something. She wasn't something bad.
I think you look after her as well as you can, Mith didn't like her being morose like this. It made him sad, too. And Mith really didn't like being sad. Mine is being nice, if that helps any. Maybe if he keeps being nice, Yours will feel better?

"Please do," Theo said, hope coloring her voice. She wanted so badly to at least have news of Teydrin, even if she couldn't see her. She was glad that the little girl was safe- Faranth forbid anything happening to her!- but she wished that her daughter could be both safe and with her. Even if it was just once, she wanted to see Teydrin again. Maybe it wouldn't happen. But if she kept updated, maybe she could still have hope.
She hated the way her mind was working now- it seemed awfully sappy and overdramatic to her, but the fact was that she probably was going to die rather soon, and that sort of thing tended to make even the most sane of people a little unreasonable.
"C'rin, can we clear something up?" she asked. A shame to ruin the pleasant banter now, but she wanted to question him before he could run away.
I hope that is true. She viewed her mate sadly. She hated upsetting him. He was such a sweetie. But she didn't want to be alone in depression, either, so it proved that misery loved company. But she could at least try to be positive.
Perhaps she will, she said.

He tilted his head into a nod, agreeing that he would try to find news of their child's progress. It was odd that he was being so agreeable, but it probably had something to do with the way his mind dealt with grief. It wasn't like he'd lost his parents, his caretakers and most of the Weyr. Losing one more person close to him wouldn't affect him too much.
...
Yeah.
"What is there to clear up?" he asked noncommitally. He was wary of whatever she would have to say, but not aobut to run away. It was sort of nice to sit around and just talk to Theo. Weird. But it didn't seem weird at the moment.
I think she might. If Mine keeps being nice. And Mith didn't sound too positive about that.

Theo opened her mouth.... and then lost her nerve.
"Never mind," she said, looking away. "It was nothing. When do you think you can get in to ask?" she asked, changing the topic back. Muuuuuuuuuch safer that way.
I hope he will, then.

Well, now that she had brought it up, he certainly wasn't going to let it go. He was stubborn like that.
"No, not nevermind. What is it? I'll answer your question when you answer mine," C'rin tilted his head back and waited. He had all day. It's not like anyone else wanted his time.

Theo glared at him. The bastard. He wasn't going to let it go, was he?
"I've asked you before," she said. "You're not going to give me a straight answer anyway, so let's just skip it, all right?" She shouldn't have said anything. Damn C'rin. "It's touchy-feely," she informed him, hoping that the mention of such horrible things would frighten him off.
"So let's just forget about it and go on our merry way, can't we?"

Perhaps ...no, okay. Unexpectedly, C'rin didn't flinch at the mention of touchy-feely. He didn't even breathe uneasy. Definate sign number one that (once again) something was wrong with the Darknessrider. Something always seemed to be wrong with him, but at least it was never boring.
The Weyrleader was calm as he reached over to shift some of her hair back into place. Or maybe just to move it. Who really knew? "But you wont be very 'merry' if I decide not to go ask Bel if we can see Teydrin, which is exactly what will happen if we don't get this cleared up." He even sounded calm.
"Besides, it's obviously important if you brought it up and are working so hard to not bring it up again."

"Well... now I forgot!" Theo snapped, trying to jerk away when he reached over to fix her hair. Was there something wrong with her hair? She liked her hair. It was about the only thing about her, as well, that wasn't being messed with by this sharding illness. If this thing touched her hair, it would be in so much trouble that it wasn't even funny.
Okay, so maybe that wasn't possible.
But she would wish it was.
Nobody and nothing touched her hair.
The Weyrwoman simmered for a moment, just barely managing to cross her arms with the proper dramatic huff.
"Fine," she said eventually, glaring as though she could set his hair on fire. "I was just going to ask you so- if- ugh. I just wanted to ask you why... what..." Why was this damn question so hard to ask?! Probably because it was embarassing. "Ugh. You've never given me a straight answer as to why you... act the way you do. I'd ask why you hate me, but that's fairly obvious so I'm not even going there. But you go back and forth between being decent and being horrible, and I wanted to know why!"
If he laughed at her, she was going to find some way to beat his head in.

He obviously did not believe that she forgot. So he waited, snatching his hand back when he was sure that she might bite it off. What had he been thinking? Touching her hair was like asking to be murdered, and on top of that, it was a sign of affection. Eeeew, said his mind.
Doodle dee! said his mind again, finishing up on the song. It seemed things were safe now, it could look around and notice what was going on.
Oh sweet Faranth. It most certainly was not safe for C'rin's mind. He stared at her as she tried to stumble through her question. Normally he would have tried to anticipate it and cut her off, but he didn't this time. Reason was, he wasn't entirely sure of the answer himself. Because he never thought about.
"Uh," the Weyrleader stalled for time, trying to think of an answer that would both pacify her and keep his bitter exterior entact. It would be hard to do. "I just...do?" Neither goals were met, and he knew it. Instead of trying to come up with a real reason, he just pressed his lips together and stared her down, daring her to make him say something real.

"You see?" Theo demanded with as much emphasis as she could employ. "You see? That's exactly why I didn't want to ask. Just forget it."
She glared at a wall.
Maybe it would explode.
At least that would be interesting.

Oh, well, if she was going to act like that, then he certainly could do what he wanted.
"It's not like I can answer if I don't even know," he spoke back with a little more emphasis than she had, if only t oestablish his point as superior. Even so, the Darknessrider's tone was even.
"What do you want me to say, Theo? How am I supposed to give you an answer to a question that doesn't have one?"
