With AIVAS long forgotten and Thread never to return, the Weyrs fell into decay. For what good were they now, now that there was no threat for them to fight? There was no purpose to their existance, so why should the regular people take food out of their own childrens' mouths to feed 'those layabouts on the hill?' The answer was: there is no reason. So the tithes stopped coming, and the dragonriders, fearing that they truly were worthless, did not protest.
But what would they do?
Without the tithes, their dragons and their own children would perish. So the dragons and their riders, as many as were left, for clutches had decreased drastically in size since Thread's disappearance, uprooted and moved to the Southern Continent, where they could make their own way unhindered by angry holders.
For a short time, there was peace, but it could not last for long.
Those who had moved to the Southern Continent first wanted the dragonriders, the parasites, out. They wanted all the continent for themselves. So they attacked the one Weyr left, killing the inhabitants and smashing what eggs they could find, for a Bloodrose had recently Clutched on the Sands.
The outcome was devastating.
All the attackers were killed, of course, but so were many riders, unsuspecting and unaided by their dragons, being indoors and unreachable by the great creatures. The Bloodrose Queens, being vengeful creatures, were unable to between when their riders died until they felt they had had their proper revenge and, in fits of rage and despair, killed all of the remaining holders on the continent, searching them out deliberately, before betweening.
The Weyr was decimated.
There were so few dragons left, and some of the riders, in despair at what had happened and what they had become, committed suicide, further decreasing the population.
Along with the small remainders of the orphaned Clutch, which contains one precious Queen egg, there are only twelve dragons left, young ones who had not matured at the time of the attack and who escaped the slaughter when the Weyrling Master wisely evacuated them.
Among them is a lone Queen, and it is up to her, and to the unborn Queen inside the egg, to repopulate Pern. For a new danger is coming, one that no one could ever have imagined...
